Frauen reflect on distressing times in a big town on debut album, ‘Unreal City’

By Aaron Lohan

A couple of weeks ago, we exclusively streamed ‘In-Between’, the latest gut punching single by Glasgow trio Frauen. Now we at Punktastic are happy to share the whole album for which that song is lifted from, ‘Unreal City’.

From tracks 1 to 9, this debut album by the post hardcore band is relentless and woeful in it’s slickly gritty and solidly impacting approach.

“‘Unreal City’ is a reflection on the two extremely emotionally draining years I spent in London, told more or less in chronological order,” says vocalist/guitarist Adam Lamont, touching upon the record’s overarching through line. The title itself is in reference to Lamont’s favourite poem, ‘The Waste Land’ by T.S. Eliot, which talks about an “Unreal City”, such as London, as a “post-apocalyptic nightmare”. “I wanted to explore how living in such a chaotic city fed into my own personal trauma which was happening at the same time,” explains Lamont. “While this is a personal mapping out of the times and places I experienced these feelings, I was careful not to specifically name anyone or anywhere involved because it was my desire to sing about how this could happen to anyone, anywhere so specifics do not matter.”

‘Unreal City’ by Frauen will be released digitally and on casette on the 10th February via Gold Mold Records, with a vinyl release due for the 10th March. You can order it on their bandcamp page. The trio will also be heading out on a number of UK shows this month, which includes an appearance at our Punktastic Presents show at The Old Blue Last in London on the 13th February, with Modern Rituals, Rope and Mercury Tales. You can find info on the show’s Facebook event page.
