Soundtrack to Second Place, No Problemos
Message to bands: please leave details/info on your press sheets, it gives us bad reviewers something to write about in these little introduction bits. I really expected to hate this six track mini-album E.P thingymabob due to the facts that not much effort seems to have been put in to its presentation and judging upon the throwaway names of the band and the songs. Being the cynical judgemental musical fascist I can often be, I had a bit of a shock when I heard this as it’s not too bad at all.

I was right however when I assumed NO PROBLEMOS were going to serve up 6 tracks of no thrills emotive pop-punk. As brutal as it may sound it is true; there’s nothing really in the realms of boundary defiance here or simpler than that; nothing you won’t hear elsewhere. But, and it’s a very big but, they execute it well enough to escape a scathing review.

There’s nothing at all wrong with using a winning formula; MOTORHEAD made a career off of effectively one song. Although NO PROBLEMOS are thankfully blessed with more melody than Lemmy and co. as all six tracks are honestly jam packed with melody. They are, however, short on major hooks and general catchiness, but this is something which I’m sure they’ll get the knack of the more they write and progress as a band, after all they’ve only been together for a couple of years.

It’s not essentially a ground breaking release and won’t thrust the band into the limelight of the UK scene, but, it does give a good indication of a lot of talent. I reckon if this lot keep at it they will do well for themselves. They have an accessible enough sound and obvious competence which will carry them well whilst they mature.
