Eve 6, Eve6
When I first heard about Eve 6, I was told they were a "baby Green Day," and that they were going to be the 'next big thing.' Well, I can tell you that one of the above statements is true, and that one is complete and utter tat. But which is which...

Named after a character in the sci-fi show 'The X-Files', Eve 6 blew up big in the US with the single 'Inside Out' which infested radio stations nationwide. But they have failed to make any impact whatsoever this side of the pond. But boy, the good folks of the UK do not know what they are missing. 'Punk' they may not be, but good they most certainly are.

Sounding nothing like Green Day whatsoever (think a twisted Lit, or a punk Ash) the first noticeable thing about Eve 6 are distinctive vocals and weird, yet brilliant lyrics. Max Collins may only be a young un' (the boys were only about 20 when this was released) but his lyrics are thoughtful and reflective, and sometimes jaw-droppingly good. Only Weezer's Rivers Cuomo is a more interesting lyricist.

'How Much Longer' is in-your-face like all good album openers should be, 'Inside Out' and 'Leech' are singalong little ditties, whilst 'Showerhead' is slower in tempo but still effective; a tale of being cheated on by a lover. 'Open Road Song' picks up the pace again, whilst 'Superhero Girl' is another standout.

'Jesus Nitelite' drops the pace again showing yet another side to the band, and emphasising the strength of Max Collins' voice, as well as the musical variety in their songs. 'Tongue Tied' is a little weak, as is 'There's A Face,' but neither song is particularly bad. The album ends with the best track, 'Small Town Trap.' The opening lyric, "Suffocate from lack of stimulation," will appeal to anybody living in a small town, dying to break free.

Everything about this band is cool, even though they might not be cool to like if you know what I mean. C'mon, check out the inlay art and the bizarre obsessions with flies for gawds sake. If you have an ear for a melody and like 'good' music, then you'll probably take a fancy to Eve 6.
