Beyond Ocean Avenue DVD,
YellowcardIt's been eight months since I received this for my birthday and I've only just got round to reviewing it. It's not that I haven't listened and watched this DVD, more a representation of just how many CDs we get to review. Anyway, I first came across Yellowcard when Nick (former PT co-founder) introduced the entire Lobster Records roster to a few of us back in 2001. So not only did we pick up on Ryan key and company, but the likes of Park and a few others too. Of course Yellowcard have gone on to very big things since the release of their Lobster Records debut, and after an EP on Fueled By Ramen inked a deal with a major. Ever since, they've gone supernova - with 500,000+ CD sales and a (tearful) performance at the MTV VMAs. Oh, and they cancelled a UK tour for 'US commitments' - the bastards.
This DVD throws in a complete live performance with interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and even 'normal' videos, most of which you've probably seen following the band's success late last year. Many music DVDs have been rushed out by larger labels who attempt to cash in on a group's surge in popularity, but thankfully this isn't the case with 'Beyond Ocean Avenue'. Infact, I'd go as far as saying this is one of the best music DVDs I own. The band are energetic in a live setting and theyu feed off the excitement from the crowd well. The setlist features a mixture of old and new songs, but it's the newer tracks that get the crowd going. 'Way Away', for example, sparks a sea of crowdsurfers which the band seem to thrive off.
If you're a fan of Yellowcard then the add-ons are a nice bonus feature. You really feel like you are getting to know the band, such is the personable feel they give off. The music videos are a bonus too, especially the making of, which I believe may have been shown on MTV at one stage. Either way, this is an excellent example of how to make a music DVD with enough material to satisfy fans and make some new ones.
