A Criminal Record, Malkovich
I don’t quite know how this happened, but scouring through my “to review” CD pile I came across 2 Malkovich CD’s. Could I really be getting that lazy and slack that I had left one CD so long the band had actually released further material since? This CD I am reviewing came out late October, and is apparently the bands latest release on Reflections records. The other a self titled that came out in summer on Coalition. I honestly haven’t had these CD’s that long, but with this band being Dutch, I just imagine it’s taken them a while to encourage U.K press. Regardless enough of the foreword, let’s get on with the music…

As the band say, “We created a masterpiece dedicated to vultures, shaved pussies and total doom!” I don’t find this particularly inspiring, however a couple of tracks into this album, I forgive the European humour (or lack of) and begin to get into the sound of this album. There is plenty of Hardcore influence in here, maybe a dash of classic rock ala Guns n’ Roses, but mainly a heavy, intense rock with screeching, screaming vocals. I’d draw immediate comparisons to The Used and such similar bands (enter your own comparison here.)

In short, Malkovich are a hard hitting, guitar driven band with lots of modern hardcore, energetic noise and passionate lyrics. It raises a sense of interest, particularly as they seem to have lost the concept of naming songs, and just use numbers, but it’s nothing major and it’s certainly nothing new. Being one of the best bands out of their country at this style of music, I can see why on the home front and across Europe they have received a lot of acclaim, but I think it will be a while before this takes off in the U.K
