“It’s as simple as 4 guys who just wanna play music and have a blast doing it.” So say Kent punk upstarts Spoilers as they release their debut EP, ‘Stay Afloat’. Hailing from other acts that have made a dent in the homegrown scene both in the South East and further afield, Spoilers balance their laissez-faire ethos with more than enough experience to get the project off the ground. “After our other bands ended and the monotony of everyday life started to sink in, we decided that a band for that sake of playing and having a laugh with no agenda was the only way forward!”
The result is their more traditional take on pop-punk. Rather than follow in the footsteps of recent success stories Neck Deep or As It Is, Spoilers instead look towards Fat Wreck Chords family. The record itself was laid down by Rob Wilks at Squarehead, before Dan Goudie took over mixing duties. “Working with Dan was outstanding he has such a great ear, he knew what to tweak and what to leave alone and really brought the songs together. He also makes a mean green tea!”
With ‘Stay Afloat’ out there, and drawing attention from punk veterans Face To Face among others, the future is ready for Spoilers. Yet for them, it really is about taking it all a step at a time. “Gotta be honest, we have planned very little, we just wanna get this EP out and get out on the road. We’re very lucky to have some great supports lined up with Teenage Bottlerocket, HDQ, Consumed and A Wilhelm Scream so we just wanna keep going, playing shows and meeting cool people!”
‘Stay Afloat’ is most certainly not a bad start.
