The Nightmare Police talk us through ‘Losing The Light’

By Glen Bushell

As New York punk band The Nightmare Police prepare to release their new EP, ‘Losing The Light’, we have an exclusive play of it below, along with a track by track breakdown from the band.

‘Taking Hold’

Writing this song took a bit of a toll on me personally. This was written when I went through a really bad break up with someone I thought cared about me. I instead was manipulated and used and this song represents the pain I felt. The deceit that I was put through and how it all made me feel.

‘Medicine Cabinet’

Over the past I don’t even know how many years I’ve dealt with addiction. I have a very addictive personality. Obsessive even. I’ve also seen a lot of people I know fall into the abyss. Unable to get out. I hope this song resonates with anyone who has dealt with addiction, knows someone who has lost their battle, or is currently still fighting their battle against it. I know I am. We aren’t alone.

‘Transitions’

When putting together the demos for this EP we decided we wanted to write a few fast songs. What came next were a bunch of failed attempts at just putting fast drums to guitar parts. After a few tries we wrote this song. It didn’t have a name for a while. We came up with the idea for naming this song Transitions as sort of a halfway point between where our old record sounded and where this one is. It’s a bit of a transition from playing slower poppier polished songs to gritty, raw songs. We hope you dig the feel on this one. Jump with us when we play it live.

‘Whoa’

Have you ever had a time in your life where you’ve been so over something that has been going on for a long time? You’re so committed to the relationship because of the time factor but the spark that once was there is gone.

‘Where Were You?’

This was the first song we wrote as a 3 piece and with Jesus playing drums for us. We came home from a cancelled show in February of 2016. It was snowing and we just decided we wanted to play anyway. Spent about 5 hours in our practice space instead of the show and wrote this song. It came from a place of togetherness but also feels as if you’ve lost something.

‘Losing The Light’ is released on June 9, and available to pre-order now.
