Punk and politics meet hip-hop in Sunny Gang’s monster track

By Ben Tipple

Hip-hop and punk have always been licking at the same ice-cream. Both, in their most traditional guises, are founded from anger and oppression, a huge fuck you to the system. New Jersey crossover four-piece Sunny Gang are keeping the traditions alive, at least on new track ‘Godzilla’. With the track revealed earlier in the year, this exclusive new video drives the message home.

“Godzilla takes a few steps away from the usual Sunny Gang party-anthem formula,” they explain. “It’s basically a culmination of all our inner frustrations as we witness the constant dead-end battles between social, political and ethnic divisions.”

“The instrumentation and vocals follow a thrash based groove which signify a haunting realm of chaos. Meanwhile, the visuals are a play on the Ludovico Technique witnessed in A Clockwork Orange. It’s full of violent images that detail many disturbing times in humanity.”

“Unlike Dr. Brodsky, we aren’t forcing the viewer’s eyes open. We want the audience to take a conscious effort to view these horrendous times in humanity, with the intention of creating an understanding that we will self-destruct as a society if history continues to repeat itself.”

‘Godzilla’ is just as angry as Sunny Gang make out. We were exhausted by the time this video finished, and rightly so!

‘Godzilla’ will appear on Sunny Gang’s forthcoming ‘Party/Animal’ LP. For more on Sunny Gang, head to Facebook.
