In Dynamics share their top ten alternative rock tacks

By Glen Bushell

Next week, Sussex-based trio, In Dynamics, will drop their excellent debut album, ‘Everything I See.’ It is a grandiose and powerful release that will surely propel the band to new heights.

We caught up with the band to give us a run down of their top ten alternative rock songs, and that inspired the creation of ‘Everything I See.’

letlive.- ‘27 Club’

“We feel that sonically, letlive. are superior to pretty much every alt rock/hardcore band around right now. The styles and influences they have are so eloquently injected into their songs. On ’27 Club’, letlive. just manage to provoke such an overwhelming sense of pace and rage into the track; yet still manage to maintain a fair amount of crisp, pop sensibility; making this amazing blend of genres that’s extremely heavy, yet pretty ‘accessible’.”

The Smashing Pumpkins – ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’

“One of the most influential Alt-Rock bands of all time, and we believe any top 10 list of this genre should include them. The Smashing Pumpkins proved that Alternative music can still be commercially successful, and doesn’t have to be stuck as an underground movement, which ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’ perfectly demonstrates, in the energetic, angsty way any great rock song should.”

Mew – ‘156’

“We can certainly attribute a lot of our music’s time signature, and feel changes to Danish band Mew’s influence. This song especially has such an uncomfortable, yet beautiful feel to it, and really encapsulates the intimate, strange lyrics. It reminds how important it is to us, to embrace different cultures of music, and be as open minded as possible.”

Biffy Clyro – ‘Mountains’

“It’s always difficult when writing an intimate song to find the perfect balance. It’s a formula of making something personal to you, relatable to everybody else. We’ve always believed that lyrics are a pivotal point in making music, and ‘Mountains’ really is a masterful example of finding a way to say something, that nobody else has.”

22 – ‘Plastik’

“22 are really one of the most impressive and musically brilliant bands we’ve ever heard. This track is drenched in extremely intricate rhythms; but these parts still manage to sit in a pocket that comfortably meanders around the vocal, without interrupting the flow of the song in any way. The band also really embrace those thick, rich harmonies; which just adds so much colour to the track. Check out their album ‘Flux’ for full master class.”

TesseracT – ‘Of Matter’

“What we love especially about the album ‘Altered State’ is the juxtaposed technical math rock riffs, with delicate intimate vocal melodies. It’s something that you wouldn’t expect to work as wonderfully as it does, and absolutely catches you off guard on first listen. The album reminds us that you have to commit 100% to your songs, as great music doesn’t come half-heartedly.”

Nine Inch Nails – ‘Various Methods Of Escape’

“‘Hesitation Marks’ has been a hugely influential album to us, and we think this track especially is one of the coolest songs ever. It’s amazing just how powerful such a stripped back song can be, and proves that writing huge anthems isn’t about how much you can cram into a track, but purely the quality, and purpose in what you’re doing. We always try and remember that.”

Reuben – ‘Moving To Blackwater’

“Reuben just have such a unique way of creating music, from the autobiographical, matter-of-fact lyrics, to their structural approach, it’s always fresh and keeps your attention. We’ve always wanted our music to show a clear direction and purpose, while staying interesting, so you could say we learnt a lot from Reuben on that front.”

Enter Shikari – ‘Anesthetist’

“’The Mindsweep’ was our favourite album of 2015. It delivers in every aspect, and has a real lastability about it. ‘Anesthetist’ is lyrically very powerful, and represents the endless boundaries of their music. We think every bands intention is to transcend any particular genre, and few bands have achieved this as well as ‘Enter Shikari’.”

Twin Atlantic – ‘Free’

“’Free’ was released while we were still discovering what kind of band we wanted to be. It was one of the most important songs for us for quite a while, in the sense that it was a pointer in the direction we wanted to be heading. It’s just an amazing piece of songwriting, lyrically and melodically, which will have you singing it for days.”
