First play of the new Safe Side EP, ‘Blossom’

By Ben Tipple

Following on from last year’s ‘Everything You Never Wanted’, Colchester five-piece Safe Side’s ‘Blossom’ EP sees them take a definitive step forward. Moving away from home recordings, it marked their first foray into a studio, giving their sound a more obvious depth.

“Only a couple of us had ever been to a studio before, and we really wanted to collectively experience that learning curve,” says bassist Danny Gaisford. “And as a result we think ‘Blossom’ feels more like a real record. We took time on it and put a lot of thought and effort into every part, and we think it shows. We wanted to make sure it’s something we would want to listen to as fans.”

The result is much cleaner and more polished than their prior material. Frank Yates’ distinctive vocals have found a new edge, continuing to give their pop-punk inspired sound a characteristically British quality. It gives the record confidence, sitting between Lower Than Atlantis’ bravado and Boston Manor’s emotive punch.

“We’ve been excited to release ‘Blossom’ as its been almost a year since our last release,” the band continue. “This EP showcases our step forward as a band, discovering and developing our sound. We put a lot of ourselves into writing the songs that form ‘Blossom’ and we’re really happy with the result. We hope that everyone else likes it just as much as we do.”

‘Blossom’ will be available from the 15th July. Stream it in full exclusively below, and grab it via iTunes from Friday. Find out more about Safe Side via Bandcamp and Facebook.
