Introducing: My Extraordinary

By Lais

Newcastle’s My Extraordinary – made up of Anthony Thompson, Martin Corkhill, Joe Anderson, Paul Dewhurst and newest member Roy Watson – are just about to release their new mini-album, ‘The World We Live In’, next week. We decided to have a chat with them to find out how they formed and got to where they are now, and what’s coming up for them in the future.

My Extraordinary have actually been together for some time now. “We spent a long time learning together and enjoying playing as a hobby. I started the band when I was in high school and over the years the line up has come together,” says frontman Ant. “I jammed with everyone in my class at the time and it just didn’t work out, so I had to look a little bit further to find the right people. We found Dewey on a website called Forming Bands, and six years later we’re still playing together.”

Fast forward six years to the present day, and My Extraordinary are about to release a mini album, ‘The World We Live In’. When asked how they’d describe it to someone who hasn’t heard it before, Ant says: “‘The World We Live In’ is powerful, full of passion and non stop. I think it’s a great way for people to be introduced to our band.”

When asked what their influences are, the band are reluctant to pinpoint any specific bands or genres. “I wouldn’t say we’re influenced heavily by bands within our genre to be honest. We listen to music as a whole and we all have our likes and dislikes,” states Ant. “Lyrically I’m influenced by what I go through and what happens to me on a personal level. I try to tell stories and I feel I’m always improving.”

After the release of the mini-album next week, My Extraordinary will be going on tour at the end of September. “We’re super excited, as we haven’t toured in a long time. And after that tour, we hope to play as many cities as we can and write a shedload of new music for whatever happens next,” says Ant.

And in the long run? “I think what we’d all love would be to get to the point where we can quit our jobs and just write and tour. Anything else would be amazing but for now that’s about as much as we can ask.”
