Lauren Novik chatted with Los Angeles’ Echosmith about an almost fight club, what it’s like being in a band with your family, and who they’d like to be stuck on a deserted island with!
LN: HOW YOU GUYS DOING?
ES: Great!
LN: SO THIS IS YOUR VERY FIRST WARPED TOUR – ANY CRAZY STORIES SO FAR?
ES: Yes- lots! Ok, the first night we came in here, you know they have the barbecue every night- we don’t remember what band was doing it, but all of a sudden these guys slam into the truck next to us
LN: NO BIG DEAL…
ES: Yeah and everyone gets like all nervous like is there a fight happening, what’s going on- so we think it’s this crazy fight but really they were just doing this WWE wrestling stuff and they were actually totally just messing around but it was like the craziest thing.
LN: WELL GET READY BECAUSE I HEARD THERE WILL BE A REPEAT PERFORMANCE TONIGHT – 9PM APPARENTY.
ES: Well we’ll be here then! There’s just lots of crazy things- it’s hard to put my finger on just one.
LN: SO BEING YOUR FIRST CRAZY LONG WARPED TOUR – DID YOU GUYS BRING ANYTHING TO MAKE YOU FEEL MORE AT HOME ON THE ROAD?
ES: We brought pillows. And I mean, we have each other and we’re all family so that’s great.
LN: THAT’S RIGHT – ANY FAMILY RIVALRY ON THE TOUR?
ES: Not yet! It’s at the point where we’ve kind of all learned to get along and we’ve learned how to deal with each other.
LN: HOW’D YOU GUYS FALL INTO PLAYING TOGETHER?
ES: I mean we just enjoy playing music together and just want to enjoy it so it’s easy. We grew up in a REALLY musical household. Our dad’s a music producer so we kind of grew up around this kind of stuff all the time – people coming over who are musicians – we couldn’t really avoid it. But six years ago we decided to be in a band.
LN: SO VAN’S WARPED IT ACTUALLY HEADING BACK TO THE UK THIS SUMMER – HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SEEING IT SPREAD AND WHAT OTHER COUNTRIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IT IN?
ES: I think it would be awesome to play the UK! I mean- there’s so much cool music that comes out of there. Plus, the people are so cool- I love their accents. It makes them cooler. Also, it would be cool to do it on this scale in Australia! We’ve been talking to a lot of people from there and we’d love to go hang out down there.
LN: WHO TAKES CONTROL OF THE MUSIC WHEN YOU’RE ALL ON THE BUS?
ES: You know most of us are usually sleeping. I don’t even think I know how to use the main CD player! Our merch guy is actually a DJ and he shows us a lot of bands we’ve never heard of before so that’s pretty cool. We’ve been using this JBL Flip which is really cool – was easier than a CD player.
LN: DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY PRE-PERFORMANCE RITUALS DO YOU BEFORE HOPPING ONSTAGE?
ES: Pray that nothing bad happens and do a ‘1,2,3 ECHOSMITH!’
LN: IF YOU GUYS HAD TO BE STUCK ON A DESERTED ISLAND WITH ONE OTHER BAND FROM THIS LINEUP – WHO WOULD IT BE?
ES: Oooooo- we’ve been hanging out a lot with the Hands Like Houses guys – they’d be a lot of fun. You know we’ve made a lot of friends so I don’t think we’d mind being stuck with anybody really.
LN: SYNDNEY – BEING THE ONLY GIRL, ARE THEY EXTRA PROTECTIVE OF YOU OR WHAT?
S: YESSSSS. ESPECIALLY at Warped Tour with it being mostly guys. With guys in bands, and guys who come to hang.
ES: And the older dudes…
S: And guys my age too!
ES: And the older dudes-
S: Ok ANYWAYS yes, they are – which is better than them not caring, but it gets a little overwhelming sometimes! Can’t go anywhere alone, that kind of thing…
LN: The buddy system in full effect right now.
LN: YOU GUYS ARE DEFINITELY SPREADING OVER THE SCENE LIKE WILDFIRE – WHEN WARPED IS OVER ARE THERE ANY TOURS YOU’D LIKE TO DO?
ES: There are some bands we’ve always dreamed about touring with like Coldplay or The Killers – honestly we’re pretty open to whatever, we’d just really like to get our music out there!
LN: AND YOU GUYS ARE WELL ON YOUR WAY – DIDN’T YOU JUST HAVE A MUSIC VIDEO DROP?
ES: Yes! ‘Cool Kids!’
LN: ARE THOSE THE SAME PANTS AS IN THE VIDEO?
ES: This is actually the exact same outfit!
