Down To Nothing – Splitting Headache

By paul

Down To Nothing are straight-up hardcore. There are no surprises. My review could well end there, but I’m sure a little more detail wouldn’t go amiss. DTN are described as being attractive to those who like, amongst others, Champion and In My Eyes. Whilst I can see where the similarities are drawn from, they’re a lot more metallic than Champion, have your atypical hardcore anthemic sound, and sound much fuller than In My Eyes. Still, it’s not half bad.

‘I Can’t Believe My Eyes‘ and ‘Burn III’ will have fists aloft and certainly stands out as highlights on this album. Contrast them with the tracks where a foot is put wrong: ‘Unbreakable’ just doesn’t sound right; ‘We’re On The Run’ sounds like it has a completely different producer (whether it has or not I don’t know – but there’s no continuity). Having said that, it’s fairly well produced overall; full enough to complement the aggression within, yet raw enough to maintain that sense of relative underproduction which is a requisite for this kind of hardcore.

Whilst its faults hold it back a little, it’s certainly one to check out if this sort of stuff is of any interest to you.
