The Void – We’ll Make Our Own History

By paul

‘We’ll Make Our Own History’ doesn’t really sit comfortably under the Punktastic umbrella so we’ll keep this short. Edinburgh quartet The Void plays what is probably best described as indie-rock. It’s possibly the laziest comparison around, but there is a definite Biffy Clyro influence on offer here, and no, it’s not just that Scottish accent. Like those chart-botherers, the band has a real flair for juxtaposing genteel moments with some crushing percussion.

It’s only four tracks but there is a sense of what the band wants to be. There’s a little tinkering going on but it’s mainly rolling guitars generating big venue rock music. It’s the sort of thing that has been lapped up by the readers of the alternative music press for, well, a long time. Does this EP have the potential to escalate the band? Perhaps, but this is a genre that yours truly isn’t really au fait with, so judgements are a pretty mute point anyway. It is worth noting that for something that’s apparently been recorded with one microphone in a home studio, the quality is pretty decent. In general this isn’t a bad little offering and makes for a nice enough change. You can’t say fairer than that.
