My Lost Youth – Reasons Reasons Reasons

By Tom Aylott

Bands such as ALL TIME LOW and YOU ME AT SIX were part of a new breed of emo-pop who made it big, having taken the baton from the likes of TAKING BACK SUNDAY and FINCH, and polished it to death along the way. They’re now passing it on to youngsters such as MY LOST YOUTH who’re from a little place called Richmond, North Yorkshire (voted Greatest UK town 2009, you know…). MY LOST YOUTH don’t sound like they’re from Yorkshire, however, repackaging the American blueprint of their peers – ‘This EP ain’t’ exactly an episode of emo’dale.

MY LOST YOUTH have created a very slick EP – the production is perfect, the melodies are faultless, the choruses soar in all the right places and it’s all very polished indeed… The problem with it, however, is that it’s incredibly predictable. There’s nothing particularly new or exciting on offer, but if you like your alt-rock with a side-helping of fringe then this just might be the record for you. My Lost Youth already sound like a “big” band, which is surely high praise at this early stage of their development, but you have to fear they might need to find a niche of their own as there can’t be much further left to go with the baton they’ve been passed down.
