Memphis May Fire – Sleepwalking

By paul

I quite like ‘Sleepwalking’, but it’s so cliche ridden and predictable I can’t really score it higher than a 6/10. The band remind me a bit of Lovehatehero; they both do the screaming metal thing, both throwing melodic vocals into the mix too. It’s a potion that’s been replicated by so many bands that those who don’t hit the top marks often come across as a bit boring. MMF are certainly not boring – ‘A Giant In A Giants World’ is a fucking beast of a track, but all too often this album just resorts to fiddly lead guitar parts and aggressive vocals. There’s a lack of finesse and composure that would really set this band apart from the others.

Still, the good songs are really enjoyable. ‘Been There, Done That’ has real driving qualities and sounds huge, while ‘Destiny For The Willing’ has some pummeling percussion. In short bursts, even on a song by song basis, this record is impressive stuff. But as a whole it just borrows from too many other bands. The lack of originality hampers it somewhat. Still, worth a listen if you like those bands who like to shout/sing/scream…
