Maycomb – Crystal Tiger Blues

By paul

It’s been almost 18 months since I last reviewed Maycomb and in that time the Brummie pop-punkers have signed to All Aboard Records and released this little EP. I remember thinking the boys had a Hit The Lights-vibe and after listening to this record my opinion hasn’t really changed all that much. The band have a slick, heavily Americanised sound that features plenty of ‘lite’ riffs and singalong hooks. It’s all very laid back and catchy and perfect for summer listening. If I’m honest it’s little that hasn’t been done before, but then the genre is very formulaic so I can’t complain. Maycomb tick all the boxes, I think all I would ask for is a bit more energy at times – ‘Hope House’, for instance, has a really strong chorus and hook but could do with a bit more energy and attitude. However, this is still a strong little EP showcasing a band on the rise. Decent stuff.
