I’ve read reviews comparing Above Them to Fightstar and Brigade which is a bit unfair as Above Them are better than both. I wouldn’t say they’re rising stars as they’re not getting anywhere near the same level of press as those aforementioned bands, but they’re certainly making an imprint on the local UK scene. Best band in Ponte? Undoubtedly. And with Deep Elm now having their backs it seems as though Above Them have a reputation to live up to with those in the know – and this EP certainly does that. With some rumbling basslines and soaring vocals the band know how to write a tune and there are five equally good ones on display here. ‘Scared’, for me, is the pick of the bunch; it’s a really good solid rock song that twists and turns with energy and passion, all without losing any of the spark or melody that makes it so good in the first place. Above Them are certainly good enough to make waves nationally, they now just need that lucky break.
