Stream the new Fierce Morgan EP, ‘Misanthropy’

By Ben Tipple

It’s perhaps coincidence that Fierce Morgan’s aptly titled ‘Misanthropy’ reaches ears the week of the British budget. For many it’s another hit to social equality, with another £3.5 billion to be cut in the next 4 years. Regardless of questions over necessity, our age of austerity is hitting the vast majority of UK citizens hard, not least those in early adulthood.

Fierce Morgan, based in the self-proclaimed bleak Sheffield, are no strangers to these tight reigns. Speaking of the EP’s opening track, ‘Sweat and Tears’, Owen Cousins says: “You look back at all the people who dossed about at school, and they’re all successful, with houses and flashy cars, because of some job they got from their cousin’s hamster’s ex-owner’s friend. Sort of makes you think that maybe you shouldn’t have worked so hard in the first place.”

It’s a theme that runs throughout ‘Misanthropy’ – a lyrical ode to the hatred of mankind. On ‘Elders’, a track which balances their fast paced pop-punk with emo sensibilities, Cousins sings: “You say things were better back when you were younger,” before emphatically proclaiming, “I don’t deserve this.”

“The general vibe of this EP is a lot more serious than we’ve ever really been before,” the band summarise. “They say bands mature with age, and we think we have done so with this, but without compromising on what makes Fierce Morgan exactly that – Fierce Morgan. Expect fast beats and a general sense of melancholy, tied with your usual pop punk riffage.”

‘Misanthropy’ will be available from the 18th March 2016 via BandCamp.
