First play of the new Video Store EP

By Ben Tipple

Rotterdam five-piece Video Store blend their gritty punk with Midwestern emo breaks, pulling in lessons learned from their previous outfits. Between them, the band members have played in the likes of Face Tomorrow, Modern Life is War, Razor Crusade, Malkovich, Gold, Kill Traitors, and Sepiroth. They are also mostly all still working on other projects, yet for them, Video Store is a way to bring it all back to basics. The band is built around enjoyment, bringing the fun back into being in a band.

“Two years after quitting music I felt like writing some songs again, simple songs, the kind of songs you write in an evening. The ones that work right from the start. Songs that to me felt like the ones that first got me into this beautiful underground scene that I still love so much,” says the band’s Aart Stekelenburg, formerly of Face Tomorrow. “So I got a group of awesome people together, we wrote a bunch of more songs and recorded them over a weekend with our old friend Menno Bakker and now here we are, we are in a band, again… releasing an old fashioned cassette just like we used to do when we started our first bands. We were pretty stoked the guys at White Russian Records wanted to help us put this baby out there and take care of all the digital stuff thatโ€™s needed nowadays. It still feels the same as back in the 90s though, and to us that’s a good thing.”

Their self-titled EP/demo is a celebration of all things simple. It’s the sound of their most fundamental influences, twisted into something the band themselves enjoy. It’s not overly complicated or revolutionary, but instead relies on its genuine passion. “You’re never too young to die, never too old to feel alive,” they sing on EP closer ‘Second Ellis’, an insight into their band mantra.

The four track EP will be available from the 21st May 2016 via White Russian Records. Head over to BandCamp to pre-order.
