Chase Long Beach – Gravity Is What You Make It

By paul

I thought Victory was a metal label? This record is about as fashionable as…well, something out of 1997. This is old fashioned ska punk, the sort of thing Tilt and Save Ferris did way, way back in the day. As a result this record seems weirdly out of place on the label and weirdly out of plac for being a brand of music that’s not really dated well. There are plenty of bands steeped in ska punk who have mixed the genre up and given it a fresh twist. Chase Long Beach are not one of those bands.

So if you hate ska, you will hate this. Simple. Like ska, then you’ll probably enjoy this, but even then it’s all been done before and done much better too. It’s energetic and brassy and bold and Karen Roberts has a sweet vocal but I was bored within a few tracks. I’d have loved this when I was 17. I’m now 29. I’ve grown up (some may disagree with that last statement) and moved on from the likes oF Reel Big Fish. CLB need to freshen things up if they think they can conquer the world…
