End of Year List Twenty: John Allen

By Maryam Hassan

Throughout December we at PT:HQ are bringing you end of year lists from bands, labels and promoters. We’ll have a new one for you everyday so keep your eyes peeled for them! See all the lists here.

John Allen

Top 3 Albums:

Cory Branan – No Hit Wonder

I just love Cory Branan, his sense of humour and his ability to play with words. His new album is easily as good as all the stuff he pit out before with a slight country twang and loads of great songs!

Tom Petty, Hypnotic Eye

Tom Petty taught me that a good song doesn’t necessarily need more than four chords and he proves time and time again why he is such an influential figure in music. Great album, especially ‘Red River’ is close to some of his all time hits!

The New Basement Tapes, Lost on the River

I love Bob Dylan and when I heard that Elvis Costello and Marcus Mumford were working on putting some of Dylans unreleased lyrics to music, I was excited. Great project, a stunning release and it even features Johnny Depp on guitar!

Top 3 Songs:

The Greatest Bastard – Damien Rice

Nobody can make you cry like Damien Rice. First album in 8 years and what a masterpiece of a song this is. Simple and heart breaking.

I’m glad I found you – Neil Young

Great solo album by old grumpy Neil and this track caught my attention when I last visited my local record store. Beautiful melody, great song to play through your headphones while walking through a dusky street at dawn!

Non-typical – Chuck Ragan

Great and powerful tune by your favourite beardwearer! Chucks album almost made it into my Top3 and this song stands out! Great vocals, lyrics and a wonderful instrumentation!

Pick for 2015:

I heard that Frank Turner will be publishing a more punk like album next year… How about that?
