When Bullets Fail – The Apathy Burden

By paul

“WhenBulletsFail are a powerful melodic metal/hardcore 6-piece band hailing from Telford, UK, taking influence from bands such as Poison the Well, Killswitch Engage, It Dies Today and From Autumn to Ashes and putting their own balls-out spin on the melodic hardcore sub-genre. Showcasing 2 full-time vocalists, 2 guitarists, a bassist and drummer to take in a wide variety of styles, the band recently completed work on their second EP ‘The Apathy Burden’.” God bless copy and paste, where would I be without you? After I initially read that, I had an inkling as to what to expect from the band and this EP, and my pre-conceptions weren’t let down.

WBF aren’t particularly bad by any means, but they’re horribly generic and obvious. I guess they’re in the Avenged Sevenfold (without the twiddly guitar parts) or FATA mould, but without anything else to separate them from the pack. This EP comprises of six songs, and while none of them are especially bad, none of them are especially good either. I don’t think I’ll be reaching for this record again after I’ve reviewed it, put it that way. Still, the explosive start to ‘Next Years Memories’ is a highlight, while the guitar work on ‘Crushing Dreams As An Artform’ suggets the band have talent up their collective tattooed sleeves. Probably a good band live, but on CD it just doesn’t envoke any kind of reaction at all.
