Drunk Couples – ‘Cruisin”

By James Davenport

Hailing from Charlestown, South Carolina, the trio that are Drunk Couples offer up an in your face, full-blown, punk / rock ‘n’ roll release simply titled ‘Cruisin’. Five fast paced tracks that never let up or slow down, not even for a second.

‘Cruisin’ offers up waves of gritty guitars and an overflow of riffs that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Every Time I Die or The Bronx album. Layered with muddied vocals, slightly reminiscent of Danzig era Misfits songs, Drunk Couples have found a winning combination for their highly impressive debut.

Opening with the minute and a half title track ‘Cruisin’, this really sets the tone with what to expect from the rest of the EP, short sharp guitar heavy tracks that will leave you wanting more. Being one of the longer songs on this release, ‘Dead Weight’ is just over two minutes long and once more features raw and rowdy guitar riffs and hook lines that are as catchy as they are boisterous.

‘Wet Cigarettes’ is the closest the band come to an epic being only three minutes long, but despite it’s moderately short run time the band manages to incorporate an abundance of rapid fire guitar changes and a solo that won’t fail to make you pick up your air guitar. Layered with an assault of vocal tracks containing hook line after hook line and lyrics such as, “Really don’t care what you have to say, you need to get the f*** outta the way” and, “We drink our fears away.” It’s obvious that Drunk Couples have not only set the bar high for future releases but its also clear they’re going to do their own thing with both passion and aggression, regardless of whether you like it or not.

Clocking in with a total run time of approximately ten minutes, it feels as though it’s over all too soon and leaves you wanting a hell of a lot more. Put simply, Drunk Couples have nailed it with this release.
