Bambix – Club Matuchek

By

I always enjoy listening to a bit of Europen punk, you never know what to expect, but on the whole it of a high standard which is unfortunately lost even more amongst American acts than our fair country is. Bambix, a Dutch trio fit exactly into this division of untapped gold and with this, their fifth album, they have produced one of the edgiest and most diverse punk albums I have heard this year. The guitars drive and burn while the melodies are infectious from the off, but the real saving grace is the superb vocals of leading lady Wick which is what really separates this from being a good album into a great album.

Released on Go Kart Europe, the Bambix revolution began in 1988 with an all female cast before various line-up changes resulted in the group we see before us. I’m not going to lie and say I have heard any previous material, but on the strength of this release, the motivation is certainly there and this has been one hell of a turn up amongst the endless lines of hardcore and emo flooding the airwaves. From the likes of the serene and flowing ‘So Sorry Song’ to the all out grinding punk rock of ‘Spotlight’ it is the strength and depth that makes it stand out from the crowds. Other defining moments include the speedy ‘Flippin, USA’ which showcases the bands talent of high speed riffage and melody to the upbeat poppy ‘Coupe Turn Off’. No stone is left unturned in the quest for diversity and Bambix have certainly got a great sound down to a tee.

The whole album flashes by in just over half an hour and is a joy to behold. Most songs are under 3 minutes and give you a slap around the face to let you know they’re there before you get the chance to really grasp what is going on which is why repeat listens are essential to really appreciate the beauty of ‘Club Matuchek’. It is a shame that because the band don’t have fashionable haircuts or expensive videos that they will not reach a larger audience though. If you are looking for a spot on, top notch, wind spitting punk album, I suggest Bambix may be right up your street. Doe het.
