First things first, it won’t take the most eagle-eyed viewer to notice that the finger in Cassels’ new video for ‘I Swipe Right’ is in fact swiping left. Those searching for meaning in that specific imagery can stop now.
“I considered giving a wanky and pretentious reason for this like ‘we’re swiping ‘left’ to the whole concept of Tinder’, but in actual fact it was filmed on the front camera of Rory’s [Salter – the video’s artist and member of Dym] laptop so came out in reverse and we had to flip it. And we were too lazy to film it again,” vocalist and guitarist Jim Beck explains. “This is why we generally make music and not videos.”
And boy do they make music. Taken from the outstanding debut EP, released earlier this year via Big Scary Monsters and Idiot King Recordings, ‘I Swipe Right’ is another piece of lo-fi perfection. As ever, to duo prove themselves adept at making a lot of noise with only a few instruments, a decision they made early on simply to make practicing and touring easier.
For those unfamiliar with the mobile dating app in question (if that’s possible these days), Cassels are commenting on the fleeting and shallow nature of modern courtship. “[It] often seems a bit messed up and perverted to me. And also quite sad in a way too,” Beck offers as inspiration for the song. You won’t be finding Cassels there then.
Instead, why not find love at Cassels’ London show in aid of The Trussell Trust Foodbanks Project. Taking place this Saturday [5th December 2015] at Power Lunches, Cassels will be joined by Old Forest, Human Nature and Dym. Full details available on Facebook.
Cassels will also be playing London’s Barfly as part of the Xposure All Dayer on the 30th January 2016.
