Watch Broker’s unsettling video for ‘Talk’

By Ben Tipple

Brighton (UK) trio Broker have developed a strong affinity to the everyday kitchen substance, cling film. Their gloriously unsettling video for ‘Talk’, an equally haunting number, is filled with the stuff.

“We shot the video in our old practice space using rolls of industrial sized cling film borrowed from the kitchen I work in,” the band explain. “For anyone curious to try wrapping their head in the stuff, we can confirm that it is every bit as disgusting and sweaty as you might imagine but oddly fulfilling and totally worth doing. Also we learned that it takes surprisingly little cling film to entirely cover a small room and three people of average height and build, so beware when using industrial sized rolls that your leftover materials WILL NOT fit in ordinary kitchen storage.”

Sage advice. Yet underneath its shiny, slightly sticky exterior, the track and video carry with them a more poignant message. ‘Talk’ speaks of a difficult life balance, one that many face, and presents it with a sound that goes some considerably way to adequately reflect those feelings.

“‘Talk’ is about the struggles of holding down love and friendships whilst in the grip of mental illness,” Broker continue. “Though this is one of the songs on the album more directly inspired by personal experience, it also came around at a time where we felt I was beginning to understand and accept how widespread these issues can in general. There is a lot of frustration and anger in the music but it’s not supposed to be entirely negative. The deeper message of the song is about accepting how you feel and letting go of the pressures and expectations you can pile on yourself to try and behave like a happy, reasonable person when you are going through hell.”

This openness made ‘Talk’ one of the quickest and easiest tracks for Broker to write. “We think that makes sense given the lyrics deal with a kind of acceptance of and submission to circumstance,” they conclude. “The whole thing just seemed to fall into place within a single writing session and before we knew it, the song was a staple of live shows. We definitely think there is a particular kind of urgency and directness to ‘Talk’ that comes from the ease with which it was written.”

‘Talk’ is taken from the band’s forthcoming sophomore release, ‘Quixota’. The record will be available from the 21st October 2016, and is available to pre-order now.

Broker currently have a number of mainland European tour dates confirmed.
