Playlist: Best of October 2013

By Ben Tipple

October has been another busy month in Punktastic HQ. Not only are we busy re-launching the exciting Punktastic Tickets, we also announced our teaming up with Oxjam in Cardiff and Warped Tour in London’s impressive Alexandra Palace. All the while we’ve been sifting through some outstanding music from bands new and old. Here’s a select handful of tracks that have made their mark on the team throughout the storms. There’s also a funky number in there because… well… why not?

AFI – ‘A Deep Slow Panic

AFI’s ‘Burials’ surpassed all expectations when it was released earlier this month, and ‘Deep Slow Panic’ is one of the band’s biggest tunes of their 20+ year history. As essential listen for fans of stadium sized, goth powered punk, and for all good-eared rock fans in general. [Tom Aylott]

Yearbook – ‘I Could Be Anyone’

The release of ‘I Could Be Anyone’ has shown just how far Yearbook have come in such a short space of time. It’s loud, aggressive and well written but most of all it’s everything you could wish for in an alternative punk rock band! Expect great things from these guys in the near future. [David Burd]

Seaway – ‘Shy Guys’

Despite being showcased back in September, ‘Shy Guys’ found itself sitting perfectly on a straightforward slab of pop punk in October – namely ‘Hosier’ by Canadian five-piece Seaway. Offering an unashamedly jovial slice of music, this track is traditional pop-punk through and through, from the pace, to the vocals, and the suitably stereotypical “love-struck dude” lyrics. [Ben Tipple]

Kids In Glass Houses – ‘Peace’

Kids In Glass Houses released their new album ‘Peace’ in October, and the title track is nothing less than absolutely divine. Complete with a spine tingling video, it’s an unbelievable banger and needs to be played on repeat forever. And that’s an order. [Lais MW]

Iron Chic – ‘What Ever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow’

There’s something about the vocals that makes everyone who listens to Iron Chic jump out and start singing along. I’m sure a whole lot of Festers have been doing just that over the festival weekend. [Mark Gadong]

The People The Poet – ‘Stabilisers (I Will Be)’

The People The Poet make their long awaited debut with ‘The Narrator’ and ‘Stabilisers’ is the pick of the bunch with a swerving melody and a climax which will give even the hardened of souls a case of the fuzzies. [Chris Marshman]

The Murderburgers – ‘Sorry In Advance’

Honest, hilarious, and at times, tragic pop-punk from The Murderburgers has deservedly brought them numerous plays and an interview on Radio 1’s Punk Show. The new record, ’Another Way Out Of Here’, is their best yet and the people at Fest have been lucky to be see them live as well. [Sam Kanal]

Lonely The Brave – ‘Backroads’

The title track from Lonely The Brave’s debut EP is an atmospheric crescendo that demonstrates their ability to write equally haunting and explosive melodies. If that’s not enough, the track truly dominates in a live setting. [Ben Tipple]

Chromeo – ‘Sexy Socialite’

This is a brilliant slab of funky dance and disco music. We still haven’t caught these guys live but one thing’s for sure – every gig of theirs is sure to be a party. [Mark Gadong]
