Despite sharing two members with upbeat melodic punk-and-rollers Riverboat Gamblers, Broken Gold are an entirely different beast. Having began life in 2008 they present the less frivolous side of punk, spring-boarded by vocalist Ian MacDougall’s serious car accident the following year.
‘Turning Blue’, the title-track for last year’s EP, is a reaction to these events. It’s questions what there is left to do when the rug is dangerously close from being pulled out from under you. In a somewhat cathartic process, the video places MacDougall firmly back in the driving seat.
“We filmed the video for ‘Turning Blue’ over the course of a few months as kind of a stylized documentary of the process of a writing a song,” MacDougall explains. “From messing around with my guitar and notebook on the couch, to demoing it out, practicing with the guys and ultimately playing live. Our good friend Justin Wilson was behind the camera and in the editing room.”
