Bobby Funk’s new EP is anything but a piss take

By Ben Tipple

“We realised fairly early that a few of the songs had piss references in,” say Falmouth four-piece Bobby Funk of their new EP. “These were purely accidental but it seemed only right to call the record ‘Piss’.” Seems as good a reason as any.

With that, Bobby Funk prepare to unleash their piss stained five track EP. Filled with fast-paced, snotty punk, it’s entirely representative of the band’s rough, tongue-in-cheek attitude.

“Approaching this record we didn’t really have an agenda for it. We had two already written and wrote the other three on the fly,” they explain. “There are various influences, from the obvious to the post punk, to the Bossanova. We still wanted that rawness and energy from the first releases, but slightly more polished.”

From the opening tracks discussion of interrupted sexual intercourse, to the spoken word openings of the self-venomous ‘My Mind Is Unkind’, Bobby Funk retain a snotty attitude that gives their sound a welcome, abrasive edge.

“Again with the first two records the lyrics are fairly tongue in cheek,” they say, listing fear of horses, the middle classes and getting shafted for beer as some of the other topics covered in the record’s short running time. Through it, ‘Piss’ soundtracks dysfunction with an insolent confidence.
