Bad Brains launch crowdfunding campaign for guitarist Dr. Know

By Glen Bushell

Last year, legendary Bad Brains guitarist Dr. Know was rushed to hospital, and was fighting for his life. The guitarist suffered a multiple organ failure, and was put on life support.

While Dr. Know – aka Gary Miller – has pulled through, the members of Bad Brains have launched a crowdfunding campaign to help with medical expenses, and his rehabilitation following treatment. You can read a statement from the band below.

“As many of you know, Gary Miller (aka Dr. Know or Doc), guitarist of the Legendary Washington DC punk band Bad Brains, suffered cardiac arrest in early November last year. His condition quickly progressed to multiple organ failure, and he was on life support for almost 2 weeks. At the time, his doctors gave him a 5% chance of survival. But by the power of PMA, LOVE and FAMILY, he was able to pull through and survive.

“He spent nearly three months in the hospital, until he was finally able to be transferred to a medical rehabilitation facility where he is getting the proper physical therapy and treatment that he needs to make a full recovery. In medical rehab, he continues to make incredible progress every day. Doc and his loved ones are now confident that he will make a full recovery and continue to touch our lives with his incredible music, kindness, and positivity.

“We started this campaign in an effort to raise money for Doc’s medical expenses and additional care that will be needed once he returns home. Doc did not have medical insurance at the time of his hospitalization, and the multiple medical bills have created an overwhelming financial strain that Doc and his family are not able to handle on their own. Since Doc has been unable to work since early November when this happened, he also needs help with his living expenses until he can make a full recovery and get back to work.

“All funds contributed to this campaign will be directly deposited into a bank account created by a representative of the Bad Brains specifically for this purpose. Any amount of money you can contribute to this fund is greatly appreciated by Doc and his family.

“Dr. Know sincerely thanks all of you for the continued support and truly believes that all of your love and PMA has allowed him to recover so quickly, against all odds! Please keep the PMA coming!”
