Zebrahead – Panty Raid

By paul

I think anyone who takes Zebrahead seriously needs a pick-axe in the back of their head. ‘Panty Raid’ refects the band’s party-vibe and, quite simply, is a great party record. There are 18 cover songs from different eras, ranging from Destiny’s Child to Britney to Avril to Cyndi Lauper. Some of the songs are utter genius, others aren’t so hot. But if you take it all with a pinch of salt ‘Panty Raid’ really is a fun little record.

‘Girlfriend’ is a lot of fun and a real standout, while ‘The Sweet Escape’ and ‘Survivor’ both work pretty well. With any record of this type, I think if you manage to have people singing along with gusto you’ve done the job and there are at least seven or eight songs that will definitely have you busting out some moves. Then there are the dodgy songs. Remember the band Shampoo? Probably not – but the Japanese so, so the inclusion of ‘Trouble’ is a stroke of genius on that front. The problem is, it was always a terrible song and the band’s version doesn’t make it any better. ‘London Bridge’ isn’t much better either, although fans of the band’s more ‘rap’ side will appreciate Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas’ song. And I’ll be honest, I don’t think ‘Beautiful’ works speeded up either.

Still, if you take this record for what it is you’ll get something positive out of it. ‘Panty Raid’ is fun. It’s a great party record – and it will bring a smile to your face if nothing else.
