Whitemare – Whitemare EP

By paul

Brighton seems to have a small hardcore factory somewhere (maybe it’s near Hove’s seafront) that turns out consistently solid, interesting and exciting hardcore bands. Often hardcore can be a bit boring, a bit samey. Whitemare though sound like a flock of seagulls fucking the American deep south, very fast and without any remorse. It’s like half the band love hardcore and half the band like classic stoner rock, so they just play it all at the same time. It’s great.

Hangover is a massive song, about taking the edge off a hangover – by getting drunk again. It’s 1:26 but doesn’t really get into full swing until at least 20 seconds in. It’s indicative of this 5 track EP that lasts about 5 minutes, its fast, catchy, and repeatedly grabs you by the ears before laughing at you and pissing on your shoes. Deal the Cards sounds like 3 good songs at once and Hangman’s Grove is a serious statement of intent posing as the 45 second opening track.

Considering this is a debut EP and lasts just 5 minutes, it’s a calling card to a bright future.
