Unless – Fake Laughter

By

Hailing from the barren landscapes of the Grimsby area, Unless are your typical local rock band, playing scuzzy punk rock with attitude. Sounding like a north eastern Nirvana spin off, they manage to whip through four tracks pretty quickly while at the same time feeling like an absolute lifetime.

Ok, so maybe that’s a little exaggerative. The vocal drawl on every song, especially opener ‘Alternative’, is so Kurt Cobain-esque you could have been forgiven for thinking his bastard offspring had packed his bags and moved to Grimsby. The guitar riffs are all very ‘dirty rock and roll’ and the chorus’s all scream out ‘lo-fi’ but that never really does it for me.

Sure, it makes you tap your foot along to the beat, but I sure as hell can’t remember anything after I’ve pressed the stop button. Pub rock would possibly be a harsh description, but it’s an accurate one, along with hints of the words ‘dull’ and ‘old’ and a pinch of ‘uninspired’.

In the end, it’s just too straight forward to elevate them above anything more than local heroes. Pedestrian would be my description, if I was describing them, which I am, so it is.
