‘Painting you on this canvas’ is one of the messiest, least cohesive records I’ve come across in a while. Undoubtedly they are a band full of good ideas and talent, but crikey this EP comes across poorly. At times it’s a sea of mistimed drums and squally guitars that sit awkwardly on top of each other, while the vocals range from the God-like genius to a piss-poor imitation of Brandon Boyd. The problem the band have is that they are clearly very talented on an individual level – the solo in ‘Black Lined Rain Clouds’ is fantastic – but then they merge genius into a borrowed drop-D riff and throw in completely unnecessary grunts and screams that sit really uneasy with the rest of the song. Put simply, there’s too much going on and it ends up sounding messy. ‘Take A Bow’ shows the band can get it right and they do so in spectacular fashion, but I get the impression a lot of people could have given up on the band before they even reached that point. Transmit Disrupt have many, many good ideas but they need to work on their execution.
