You Me At 6, We Are The Ocean… To Catch A Thief. You may have heard of the first two of those three bands, but I guarantee the next band to invade MTV2 and gain an army of floppy-fringed fans are Scots To Catch A Thief. I’ve been following these guys for quite some time now and have no doubts at all they will be touted as the next big thing by the more mainstream press in 2009. ‘Your Eyes Will Burn’ has a Thrice/The Used/Taking Back Sunday feel with big riffs and catchy choruses that rival You Me At 6 in the teen heartthrob stakes – making it inevitable these chaps will do big things in the coming months.
Now you could argue the world doesn’t need another band that sound like this and I’d be the first to agree, but I’m a sucker for any band that can make me sing along and can grab my attention from the first hook. To Catch A Thief do both very well. ‘Until I Wake Up’ has as big a singalong as ‘Save It For The Bedroom’ and ‘A Passing Phase’ and the EP’s title track have nice guitar riffs which bounce out of your speakers like an E-number riddled ADD child who forgot his medication. On a space hopper.
The trick the band have nailed is to not stray from a winning formula. Ali Lane hits an impressive range of notes and the trio behind him create quite a din, grooving and dancing to some of the best riffs a UK band of this type have managed to write. ‘We Are The Cancer’ is the song which will probably break them big and would be my choice of first single – but this lot could pick any of the 5 songs and be onto a winner. The future’s quite exciting, mark these boys down as the next big thing before Kerrang! “introduces” them to you…
