If I’m honest I wasn’t sure what to expect from the ludicrously monikered Tim and Sam’s Tim and the Sam Band. I’d heard their name mentioned in various threads on the PT forums and had seen Luke Leighfield namecheck them a few times, so they were on my radar without ever actually hearing any of their music. I was therefore surprised when I found out Tim and Sam (and their band) were actually instrumentalists. If that is even a word. No lyrics, no singing – which is kind of refreshing, even if it does leave a little feeling that this record is incomplete. I’m a lyrics man, I love them, and I feel if the band had a vocalist they’d be much better. But each to their own.
The tracks on this EP are impressive in a musical way. There’s layers of instruments to create a really ‘full’ sound and the structures are very impressive. It’s a warm record, one of those hopeful Autumnal records you listen to on a boring Sunday to make you feel better about yourself. ‘The Badger Set’ is a lovely little song, but my only real gripe is the lack of vocals – I feel that with words the band would be even better. Without them it feels like something is missing. Nevertheless I feel a lot of people will undoubtedly love this band so if you like Luke Leighfield and bands of that type give Tim, Sam and anyone else in their band a whirl.
