Think:Fire have shared the stage with some pretty heavyweight names in the last 18 months. I actually saw them open up for Say Anything earlier this year and thought they were on the right lines but lacked a final punch; that knockout blow the other bands had that night was elusive for T:F, but their debut EP on LongWave Records certainly shows the band can write a tune. Like Fightstar without Charlie’s signature vocal, the second track on this EP (yet another PR firm that doesn’t include the song titles, tut tut) is a standout for it’s huge vocal hook and catchy riffs.
And while the sound is very Americanised – dare I say it the vocals at times sound like Ian Watkins (I know he’s Welsh, but he signs with that American tinge doesn’t he?!) – Think:Fire know their limits and they push at the boundaries of where they can go. The drums are exemplorary throughout. The guitars sound great too. It’s a very well recorded EP. There are plenty of good ideas too, the third track reminds me of a song structure that Finch were pushing towards on ‘Say Hello To Sunshine‘, minus the aggression. It’s catchy yet it’s not too obvious.
And while other bands already do this kind of thing pretty well, there’s always room for bands that have high standards. Think:Fire certainly have those – whether they can kick on and reach the heady heights of other UK bands on the up is up to them…
