There’s a sense of familiarity on this EP. The riffs are borrowed from ‘Illusion of Safety’-era Thrice, while the melodic vocals may well be nicked from Senses Fail. The Upset Victory, in short, are a band riding on the back of the success of a million others. It’s not that they’re a bad band at all, because they’re far from being bad, but it’s all the same type of music we get sent in to review way too often for my liking. There’s little originality – while ‘Signals’ is performed and recorded to a very high standard it may as well be Senses Fail without some of the screaming. It’s just so predictable, so generic and so obvious. It’s a great shame because that song, and others on this EP, showcase a band with a clear eye for writing a good tune. Everything’s in the right place, meaning songs like ‘The Will’ will have you tapping and singing along in next to no time. Problem is, you’ll most likely get lost trying to sing an entirely different – yet similar – song in the process.
