The Ruined are a quintet from Peterborough playing a vicious brand of punk rock that evokes The Misfits alongside Metallica, as well as more familiar fare such as Hot Water Music. This 2-track sampler shows that they’re not the gimmick band that their masks might suggest to the more immediately judgemental, as well as being a hell of a lot of fun.
‘Generation Braindead’ comes off like Danzig-era Misfits, all sludgy guitars and chunky riffs that are heavy enough to satisfy even the most ardent metal fan while retaining a very definite punk sensibility that is best expressed in the impressively catchy chorus. Singer Shaun has a unique enough voice to ensure that Danzig’s vocal tics are present without overshadowing his throaty delivery, while settling into his rhythm early on by launching headlong into every line with the maximum effort and conviction. ‘Go Get Ruined’ is more anthemic in its construction, filled as it is with big vocal lines and yet more intelligently catchy riffs. It’s not quite as hard as ‘Generation Braindead’ but perfectly sums up the appeal of The Ruined – it really isn’t rocket science but its a hugely good ride totally devoid of ego that places them firmly in the ‘One to Watch’ category.
It might be obvious that The Ruined are hardly the most cerebral of bands, but they do what they do well and make no apologies for the relentlessly impressive variety of punk that they play. Well worth a look if you’re after something a little different, and if you’ve ever flirted with the idea of having a Devilock you cannot let this pass by.
