The Kickliner – The Kickliner

By Tom Aylott

With little online presence outside of the once obligatory Myspace page (proving people do still use it!), THE KICKLINER have their work cut-out for them if they’re to build a name for themselves and develop any sort of following outside of the local Sheffield/Derby scene. As they’re evidently letting the music speak for themselves, it is with thanks that the music is actually quite good on their self-titled EP.

I hate to use the word ‘indie’ but that’s what THE KICKLINER‘s EP is – but don’t let that put you off as it’s a driven EP full of potential. Joe Doris’s vocals are very Thrice-esque and the music is low-key but rocking. The standout track is ‘Paper and Grass’. which builds up well before picking up the tempo and launching into the song full force.

The songs have a very English sense of melancholy about them, no doubt informed by the bleak and rainy industrial town the boys emanate from. A promising start and well worth a listen.
