The Go Progress are bloody good. They’re good in an Idlewild meets The Cure meets The Smiths kinda way, which is cute, quaint and everything in between. The songsmithery on hand in this set of songs is nothing short of genius really; carefully crafted songs, delicate vocals, well structured melodies – on the face of it TGP have it all. But (and yeah, it was coming) there’s just a very small something missing which takes this band from good to great. I’m not exactly sure what it is mind, but there’s something not here. Having said that, TGP still dump on most bands from a great height.
As opener ‘Vapour Trails‘ runs smoothly into ‘Lost Property’, you get the sense there’s something magical here. Closer ‘Sticks and Poems’ merely re-inforces that opinion. If you like bands such as Tellison or Tanaou then The Go Progress will be right up your alley. They combine a lo-fi sound with a strong sense of songwriting, and with those traits to hand this is a band that can really go far. My money’s on them having this EP released by a label before summer 2005…
