The Friday Night Boys – That’s What She Said

By paul

The Friday Night Boys are the latest Fueled By Ramen signings and it’s not difficult to see why. This short EP acts as an introduction to the band and it showcases a very poppy, over-produced band not a million miles away from the likes of All Time Low or a slightly quicker, punchier The Higher. Lyrically this is really tepid fare, the kind of stuff all the FBR bands sing about. And I know for a fact I would have loved this 5 or 6 years (or maybe even 10) years ago. But this is very well trodden ground and I think it’s difficult for bands to come in and try and sweep people off their feet when they are merely doing what everyone else has done for years.

To be fair to TFNB this is better than most of the similar bands doing the rounds. Certainly this is better than most of the soundalikes on the very same label. It’s slick, there are huge choruses and everything is in the right place. The title track could easily be an All Time Low b-side though and I guess that’s the problem; TFNB lack their own identity really and as a result kind of get lost in the midst of the many, many other bands doing the same thing. That said, they do what they do well and, as I said, I can see this appealing to a lot (and I mean a lot) of kids. Perhaps my age is catching up with me!
