The Devil Rides Out – Join the Alliance

By

Self proclaimed ‘horror punks’ eh? Sounds interesting to say the least, and certainly makes a refreshing change from the various acts knocking around that display more in common with fairies than Satan. The trio are made up of Steve Satan, Marti Corpse and Leigh ‘Tard’ Zombie, which pretty much sets the tone for what is to come. From start to finish it displays good quality vocals and pounding drumming which doesn’t let up in the slightest for the ten minute duration, and much to my surprise it proved an enjoyable experience and not the death fest as I was expecting.

‘The Blackened Heart’ opens in thunderous fashion, and gives a formula and base for the rest of the EP to flow from as a sense of dark unease casts a shadow over the highly melodic drumming and guitars displayed. ‘Body Counts’ shows a slight lack of depth but the pace changes remain impressive and the use of screaming is inserted well showing a keen eye for arrangement. ‘Creeping Death’ is the most accessible track on show with a bouncy theme running throughout, while ‘Ashes to Ashes’ takes the crown for track of the EP, with its jagged edges and melody proving to be the perfect blend of energy and bleakness mixed together.

For fans of the darker punk scene, this will undoubtedly appeal to you. It is produced well from start to finish and remains edgy and rough without ever sacrificing any of the style the band display. It isn’t all perfect and repeat listens prove a bit of a chore, but as it stands it is another good advert for the band and may encourage more people to reach for that black eye liner.
