The Dead City Stereo – S/T

By paul

I’m always impressed to see bands wearing their influences on their collective sleeve, especially when those influences aren’t exactly the flavour of the month. Well, it’s clear where TDCS are coming from – they are all about the Briefs, the Clash, Rancid. The mouthy bloke with the censor bar over his eyes on the cover of this EP, fag in hand, tells you more than I can here.

The fact is that this Exeter based band are good. Sure, it’s not ground breaking, but actually I think, just perhaps, this lot have stumbled on a sound they didn’t quite intend to stumble on. I assume they just want to play like their favourite bands. No bad thing in my book – if you do something very well, you don’t need to break new ground. But, actually they have quite a distinctive sound. Slower than you’d expect, melodic as hell, but still nice and spikey.

I reckon you’d be lucky to catch this lot as support on the next Briefs tour or some show like that. Lovely stuff.
