The Beautiful Mistake – This is who you are

The Beautiful Mistake – This is who you are
I can now add this quartet to the list consisting of ‘heard the name, heard nothing of the band’. Once again my hopes were high as I received the LP, and as I popped it in my CD player anticipation levels were running high. But alas I was in for the type of disappointment usually reserved for Lincolnshire football clubs. I suppose there is nothing astoundingly wrong with the way the four piece craft their music, it is just that there is nothing particularly interesting about it. It ambles along, simply giving you a gentle wave, rather than a clenched fist screaming fuck you.

As mentioned previously, musically the band is just about spot on, the heavy clunking chords and vocals are more often than not hitting that nail directly on the head. It is just in sections it never fails to completely pull you in and on barely one song do you find yourself completely immersed. Tracks such as ‘Wide Eyed and Wasted’, ‘Cold Hearts’ and ‘A Safe Place’ manage to conquer the mountain of enjoyment with ease and attempt to turn the album in the right direction, but tracks such as this are generally in short supply. Title track ‘This is who you are’ and ‘My Reminder’ are the bane of the albums existence as they teeter on the verge of strong, but dip in and out of form, which is ultimately where the album falls down.

I have to admit this album was a huge disappointment. It simply fails to deliver consistently and can never make its mind up about how it wants to be portrayed. It won’t be for everybody and for those who are sceptical of the emo genre, this will do nothing except fuel your contempt for those that need to eat a pie or two. There are flashes of what they are capable of, but all to often it slips into being all to familiar from albums which have come before it. Final track ‘Cold Hands‘ is an example of how talented the band are, but it just isn’t delivered enough.
