If you like Boys Like Girls, Asteria and really poppy pop-punk then you’ll love TGL. It’s saccharine sweet and way, way too sugary, but it’s done in a really hooky way. ‘Sweeter As Fiction’ is 10 melodic rock songs with huge singalongs. It doesn’t re-invent the wheel, it doesn’t break new ground and it doesn’t raise the bar in terms of bands before them. It’s just a good old fashioned solid album.
‘Heels Over Flats‘ is a good example of this record – both lyrically and musically. It is generic and I’m sure the band know it. But as they prove time after time on this album they know how to write a chorus. ‘Beauty School Dropout’ could be a Boys Like Girls b-side but it’s catchy and will have you singing along in no time. And you can say the same for ‘Valleys’ or the album’s title track. If you like poppy pop-punk then TGL are a band I would have no hesitation in recommending.
