Templeton Pek – Illusions of Grandeur EP

By paul

Templeton Pek appear to like two things – the Japanese and women. And maybe even Japanese women. With a distinctly oriental EP sleeve and myspace, the band also find women to join them in plenty of their promo shots – including some ‘lovely’ ladies from Hardcore Whores. Put these things to one side and you have an A-Team worshipping trio who mix up punk and rock very nicely indeed and show a band with plenty of promise. Sounding like a cross between Foo Fighters and Fastlane, when the band really go at it – as they do on ‘Shikata’ – they sound really, really fucking good.

‘Full Tilt‘ and the slower ‘Eight In Out of Ten’ are brilliant too, showcasing a band with a vocalist who can really hit the spot with a throaty, powerful vocal line. If I would have one complaint it’s that the band aren’t quite at the level they show glimpses of and this inconsistency costs them half a star. The opening track isn’t as good as the next two, while ‘Konami’ and ‘half Cut’ suggest a little bit of extra work is needed. But this is swiftly put to one side when the guitars and drums scythe and thud their way through ‘Full Tilt‘. Templeton Pek are not the finished article, but they’re definite ones to watch.
