I’m not quite sure if you can intentionally set out to write music this accessible, but with the Anniversary EP, MC Goldie Wilson has penned something which is obviously the product of a hundred catchy bedroom ideas. His sound combines the likes of MC Lars, in terms of delivery, with the bounciness of someone like Race The Sun to deliver a really summer-esque salvo of happiness.
That last point epitomises what’s going on here. The smile this is sung with alongside the structure of short, fast verses and wondrously big choruses is more than reminiscent of Hellogoodbye and is designed to have you singing along within two or three listens. And it works. Tracks like ‘Hairodynamics’ have that catchy singalong sound and the obligatory handclaps thankfully don’t teeter into the Myspace realm of hooks-too-many but they stay nicely sharp. Most tracks also add just the right dose of humour with ‘Sad Kids Can’t Dance’ exemplifying this: “She’s got a body like a battleship, battleship. She’s got a booty like an aircraft carrier.”
Opening track ‘Spring Break 1871’, though, is destined to be the song that introduces you to the savvy sound of Goldie. Blazingly fast, coated with a veritable layer of pop-punk sugar, and with a rather nice flow to boot, it’s got cross-genre appeal written all over it. Praise must be given to him for cherry-picking the best parts from two or three sub-genres and doing a great job of combining it into a single package. The only downside I can see is the production on the whole; whilst it certainly does the job, fits the current Casio-bedroom-like stylings, it’s obviously not got that gloss of his soon-to-be contemporaries. It doesn’t detract from the overall sound though, and you’ll struggle to get these tracks out of your head should you hear them at a barbeque or something this summer. A must-listen for fans of MC Lars, Hellogoodbye and general fans of the new wave of American pop-punk/’craze’ bands.
