Talons – /Noumenon split

By paul

First thing’s first, a quick apology for being slack. This split single actually came out on Big Scary Monsters last month and is limited to just 100 copies. A quick check though and it appears there are a few copies left at www.bsmrocks.com. Subsequently, Noumenon have also released a five track digital EP this week as well. So, apologies for the tardiness.

TALONS is an instrumental six piece from Hereford that incorporates not one but two violins into the guitar heavy mix, generating a big, techy yet classic, apocalyptic sound. ‘Anthropods’, the track the band offers up here, is a pummelling four and a half minutes of intricate arrangements, showcasing epic sounding guitars, those somewhat haunting violins and some beastly drumming. Undoubtedly this is a track for fans of experimental music (the lack of vocals means this is lacking in immediacy), although it’s hard not to be impressed after a few repeated listens.

‘Pimpin Zenith Part II’, the track from Chicago based NOUMENON, doesn’t feel quite as organic. Like Talons before, it’s an instrumental foray into technical mathcore realms, but in this case it feels more like an extended introduction piece or a massive mid-song solo. It doesn’t quite feel as though you’re getting the full spectrum of what the band has to offer. Still, it’s an angular sliver of noise and menace that makes for intriguing listening at the very least.
